French Alps #1 | Nat Ward
In French Alps #1, I move away from the entangled scrubland of the Murray region to explore the sharp, structural clarity of the high-altitude landscape. This work is a meditation on the permanence of the alpine horizon—a terrain where the air is thin, the light is piercing, and the land is pared back to its essential forms.
Using oil and cold wax on board, I’ve worked to capture the 'frozen' stillness of the peaks. The wax allows for a unique, low-sheen translucence that mimics the quality of alpine light and the density of stone. Layers are built and scraped back to reveal a surface that is both atmospheric and architectural. This painting is less about a specific vista and more about the feeling of being held within the silence of the high mountains—a space where the scale of the world shifts, inviting a profound and quiet reflection.

Artist Note
Observe the horizon where the stone meets the sky. This work is designed to evoke the thin, quiet air of the high Alps; allow your eye to rest on the subtle textures of the wax to sense the weight and silence of the mountain.
