French Alps #2 | Nat Ward
In French Alps #2, the landscape is felt as a series of shifting planes and structural weights. While its counterpart explores the sharp clarity of the horizon, this work delves into the internal rhythm of the mountain itself—the way stone and shadow interlock to create a sense of enduring presence. The medium of oil and wax on board is essential here; the wax provides a density and 'earthiness' that echoes the geological age of the Alps.
I build the surface to hold a quiet, mineral depth, using muted tones to suggest the cooling air and the silence found at elevation. This painting is an invitation to slow down and observe the quiet architecture of the earth, where beauty is found not in a single vista, but in the gradual reveal of form and light within the ancient landscape

Artist Note
Follow the interlocking forms of shadow and light. This work invites you to consider the weight and structural silence of the mountain—a place where time is measured in geological layers rather than minutes.
