High Country #1 oil landscape work of the Tasmanian High Country by contemporary landscape artist Nat Ward

High Country #1

$490.00Price

High Country #1 returns to the elevated landscapes where light feels thinner, colour is subdued, and the land stretches with an austere quietness. These environments hold a particular kind of stillness — a clarity that comes from exposure, from wind moving over open ground, from the minimal forms that define the high plains. Here, beauty is subtle and restrained, emerging in soft tones and small shifts of atmosphere.

Working in oil and wax on board, I build a surface that echoes this spaciousness. The wax creates a translucent veil, allowing light to settle gently within the work. Layers are applied and removed, leaving traces of gesture that sit like weathered marks on stone or grass. Through this process, I aim to convey the slow, persistent rhythms of the high country — its quiet endurance, its delicate balance between movement and rest.

The high country draws me for the way it holds contrast: openness against detail, clarity against haze, fragility against resilience. In this work, forms drift between definition and dissolution — branches, slopes, and distant lines appearing and softening again. It’s a landscape that asks for attention rather than offering it, one that reveals itself gradually through patient looking.

My intention is not to depict a specific place, but to evoke the feeling of being within it — the thin air, the muted palette, the hush that settles across the land. These places encourage a slower gaze, an awareness of the subtle interplay of colour, texture, and light. They invite stillness, offering space for the viewer to pause.

Ultimately, High Country #1 is a meditation on presence — on how landscape shapes perception, and how quiet, understated environments can leave the deepest impressions. It is a reflection on the resilience of exposed places and the gentle beauty held within their simplicity.
