Atmospheric contemporary landscape painting by Nat Ward titled High Country Tasmania #1. A textured oil and cold wax study on

High Country Tasmania #1 | Nat Ward

SKU: OW26 211

In High Country Tasmania #1, I move into the vast, ancient terrain of the Tasmanian plateau—a landscape where the weather is a constant, sculpting presence. This work is a study in the resilience of the high plains, where the vegetation is low and the earth is pared back to its essential, rugged forms.Using oil and cold wax on board allows me to evoke the atmospheric 'weight' of the Tasmanian wilderness.

The wax creates a unique, matte surface that holds the cool, muted tones of the high country—greys, soft ochres, and deep, shadowed greens. Through a process of building and incising, the painting becomes a physical map of the terrain, inviting the viewer to sense the thin air, the biting wind, and the profound silence of a world that feels both fragile and eternal.

Let your eye rest on the horizon where the clouds meet the stone. This work asks you to consider the 'geological time' of the Tasmanian high country—a place where every mark on the land is a record of wind and resilience. Stay with the cool, layered textures to feel the stillness of the plateau.
