Wattles #3 | Nat Ward
In Wattles #3, the familiar brightness of the wattle is presented as both subject and sensation—a celebration of light within the muted complexity of the Australian bush. These trees, often found at the roadside or scattered through dry scrub, hold a quiet power, their blossoms marking the turning of seasons and the resilience of place.
Working with oil and wax on board, I seek to preserve that specific moment when gold breaks through shadow. The layered surface carries both translucence and density; the paint is pushed, pulled, and veiled until the light seems to breathe from beneath the surface. The wax traps glints of pigment like dust or pollen caught on the air, creating a texture that evokes a sensory memory: the shimmer of color in peripheral vision and the faint heat of afternoon light. This painting is an invitation to slow your vision and recognize the simple, enduring beauty of what persists in the modest, living spaces of our landscape

Artist Note
Focus on the glimmer of yellow where light meets the surface. This work is designed to evoke a 'slowing of vision,' allowing the viewer to recognize the subtle tones of the bushland that exist between the bursts of gold
