Wetlands #2 Oil Painting by Australian landscape artist Nat Ward

Wetlands #2

$4,760.00Price

Wetlands #2 continues my exploration of those threshold spaces where water and land merge — places of reflection, fragility, and quiet persistence. In these environments, form and movement are constantly shifting; boundaries soften; time feels slower, more circular.

Working in oil and wax on board, I build the surface as a layered memory — translucent washes, veiled pigments, and fine traces of gesture suggesting reeds, pools, and the shimmer of reflected light. The wax allows air and moisture to seem suspended within the work, echoing the atmosphere of the wetland itself. Each layer holds its own rhythm, like ripples that remain long after the initial disturbance has passed.

The wetlands draw me because of their in-between nature — not quite solid, not quite fluid — a place where reflection becomes both literal and emotional. In painting them, I’m less concerned with describing what is seen and more with conveying how it feels to stand within that quiet, luminous space: the air heavy with scent, the water still but alive beneath the surface.

Wetlands #2 sits within a broader practice that attends to overlooked ecologies — landscapes of endurance rather than spectacle. These are the lungs of the land, quietly filtering light, water, and time. Through painting, I seek to honour their balance and their fragility.

I hope the viewer feels drawn into this stillness — a kind of contemplative suspension where reflection becomes meditation, and the ordinary becomes quietly profound. In Wetlands #2, water is both mirror and memory, and the landscape asks only that we pause long enough to listen.
